About this role
The Exploratorium is seeking Exhibit Engineers and Senior Exhibit Engineers for a fixed-term position through April 30, 2029, based at Piers 15/17 in San Francisco.
Exhibit Engineers design and produce new and renovated interactive exhibits involving mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. Responsibilities include creating design documentation (drawings, schematics, specifications), managing budgets and timelines, fabricating tooling and production jigs, and participating in exhibit installations.
Senior Exhibit Engineers work with minimal supervision and are expected to mentor junior staff.
Qualifications: shop knowledge in wood, metal, and plastic fabrication; Autodesk Inventor expertise; AutoCAD proficiency. A degree or equivalent in engineering or design is required. The Senior role requires 5+ years of exhibit engineering experience and 2+ years at the Exploratorium.
This is a union position (IATSE Local 16). The role is on-site at the Exploratorium's waterfront campus.
Compensation:
- Exhibit Engineer: $41.37–$43.79/hour (steps 1–3 of union scale)
- Senior Exhibit Engineer: $46.30–$49.01/hour
